PART – 15

Arjun left the hidden room with a storm raging inside his mind, every step heavier than the last as the truth he had just uncovered refused to settle, turning his thoughts into a battlefield of doubt, anger, and determination, and as he walked out of the abandoned factory into the cold night air, one decision became clear—he needed to find Vikram again, because if anyone knew the truth about his past, about the missing pieces of his memory, it would be him.

Without wasting time, Arjun returned to the dockyard where he had last seen Vikram, hoping that the place which had once revealed the impossible might do so again, and as he arrived, the eerie silence of the location greeted him once more, the sound of water echoing faintly in the distance, creating a familiar yet tense atmosphere, as if the place itself was waiting for something to unfold.

“Vikram!” Arjun called out into the darkness, his voice firm yet carrying an edge of urgency, as he refused to leave without answers this time, and for a moment, there was nothing but silence, making it seem as though he might be alone again, until a figure slowly emerged from the shadows, stepping into the dim light with the same calm presence as before.

Vikram Dutta stood before him once again.

But this time, the tension between them was different, heavier, more personal, as Arjun no longer saw him just as a missing partner or a potential ally, but as someone who had been part of a truth that had been hidden from him, and without hesitation, Arjun stepped forward, his eyes locked onto Vikram as he demanded answers, his voice no longer calm but filled with controlled intensity.

“Tell me the truth,” Arjun said. “About me… about everything.”

Vikram remained silent for a moment, studying Arjun’s face as if trying to decide how much to reveal, and then, with a quiet sigh, he finally spoke, his voice carrying a weight that suggested he had been expecting this confrontation, that he knew this moment would come eventually.

He confirmed what Arjun had begun to suspect—that years ago, both of them had been part of a secret operation designed to infiltrate “The Broker’s” network at its deepest level, an operation so classified that even within their own department, very few people were aware of its existence, and the goal had been simple but dangerous—to get close enough to identify “The Broker” and dismantle the entire system from within.

But as Vikram explained further, it became clear that things had not gone according to plan, as the deeper they went, the more complicated the situation became, until they reached a point where they had to make a choice—either step back and risk losing everything they had uncovered, or go deeper and risk losing themselves, and it was at that moment that everything changed.

According to Vikram, Arjun had been the one to make the decision.

A decision to go deeper.

A decision that had consequences neither of them had fully understood at the time.

Vikram revealed that in order to maintain his cover and gain access to the highest levels of the network, Arjun had agreed to undergo a procedure that would erase parts of his memory, allowing him to operate without suspicion, to become someone who could move within the system without revealing his true intentions, a move that was both strategic and dangerous, as it meant sacrificing his own past for the sake of the mission.

Arjun stood frozen, the weight of those words hitting him harder than anything else, as he struggled to accept that this had been his own choice, that the confusion, the missing memories, the unanswered questions were not the result of someone else’s manipulation, but something he had willingly allowed to happen.

“Why didn’t you tell me?” Arjun asked, his voice quieter now, but filled with pain.

Vikram looked away briefly before responding, his expression serious. “Because if you remembered too soon… the entire operation would have collapsed. And you would have been killed.”

The truth hung heavily between them, raw and undeniable, as Arjun realized that everything he had been chasing was not just a mystery to solve, but a path he had already walked before, one that he had chosen, even if he no longer remembered why.
